Reasons for Judgment: NHL Style

Brendan Shanahan, the NHL's new Senior Vice President of Player Safety, delivers a concise disciplinary ruling via video that lands Buffalo Sabres' forward Brad Boyes with a two-game suspension for a hit to the head on Toronto Maple Leaf (now Marlie) rookie Joe Colborne.

Note the coherent, orderly manner in which Shanahan logically processes the issues, including:
  • The facts and the alleged  offence commited (with video);
  • The offender's submissions;
  • The Rule involved and the finding that it has been infringed;
  • The consequence of the offence in terms of injuries resulting;
  • The offender's prior disciplinary history, if any;
  • The penalty imposed.

Quite professionally handled, and a major step forward in the league's disiciplinary procedures.
